The Fairhaven Project
Fostering peace and mutual understanding
The Fairhaven Project is a non-profit dedicated to fostering peace and mutual understanding through conflict resolution programs and initiatives. Founded to support Israeli and Palestinian youth participating in maritime education on S/V Fritha, The Fairhaven Project has evolved to promote global peace and support persons affected by conflict.
Transforming perceptions and cultivating friendships
Humanization, shared understanding, and cooperative experiences help to promote peace and understanding on a personal level. By combining life at sea, practical seamanship skills with conflict resolution and team-building exercises, The Fairhaven Project transforms perceptions and cultivates friendships across historically difficult divides.
We navigate toward a future where education and empathy empower a new generation to start the healing to realize peace and cooperation.

OUR MISSION
To sail towards a future where understanding and cooperation transcend conflict, and where the next generation of leaders emerges not from the battleground, but from the shared experiences and lessons learned at sea.
The Profound Power of Youth
The Fairhaven Project is designed to support young adults at its core, blending practical maritime training with essential life skills such as conflict resolution and team building, alongside academic studies in oceanography, ecology, and maritime science. Our goal is to reshape perspectives, nurture empathy, and build strong, lasting friendships across historical divides. By sharing the unique challenges and camaraderie found on the open sea aboard the tall ship S/V Fritha, participants from Israeli and Palestinian backgrounds discover common ground, moving beyond fear and prejudice to see each other as individuals with shared hopes and dreams.
At the heart of our initiative is a deep commitment to the sea’s unifying power as a force for peace, understanding, and educational growth. The Fairhaven Project is dedicated to bridging gaps between young Israeli and Palestinian individuals, who have spent their lives in the shadow of conflict, by offering them a transformative experience of dialogue, skill-building, and mutual discovery at sea.
Recognizing the critical need for peacebuilding in conflict-affected areas like Gaza, we are determined to extend our reach to young people directly impacted by war. Our mission is ambitious yet clear: to foster a new generation of leaders equipped with empathy, responsibility, and the ability to champion peace and understanding within their communities and the wider world.
Thanks to partnerships with entities including the U.S. Department of State and the Northeast Maritime Institute, and the invaluable support of our donors, The Fairhaven Project transcends the boundaries of a mere educational program. It is a beacon of hope, aiming to forge a more peaceful future through the transformative and enduring power of maritime education and the shared spirit of humanity.
History
The Fairhaven Project emerged as a beacon of hope in the tumultuous waters of conflict resolution, leveraging the principles of maritime education to navigate towards peace and understanding. Initiated in 2008 through a collaborative effort between the U.S. Department of State and the Northeast Maritime Institute – College of Maritime Science (NMI) in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, the project was developed to transcend conventional educational boundaries by uniting Israeli and Palestinian youths amidst the sails and ropes of the tall ship S/V Fritha. At its core, the project is an innovative endeavor that intertwines tertiary education with the profound mission of dismantling long-standing animosities and fostering dialogue between communities historically mired in conflict.
Designed with conflict resolution as its cornerstone, The Fairhaven Project carefully selected participants based on their leadership potential, maturity, and personal experiences with the violence that pervades their regions. The inaugural session in 2008 saw six students—three Israelis and three Palestinians, each carrying their own stories of loss and hope—embark on a three-week journey not just across the seas but toward mutual respect and understanding. The essence of the project lies in transforming perceptions, as participants who initially viewed each other through lenses of enmity come to embrace friendship and collaboration.

Moving Forward
As the current conflict in Gaza continues to unfold with profound human and geopolitical implications, The Fairhaven Project finds itself at a critical juncture, both as a symbol of hope and as a practical platform for peacebuilding and reconciliation. Looking forward, the project is uniquely positioned to adapt its mission to address the evolving needs and challenges of a region once again marked by violence and division. In this light, The Fairhaven Project commits to not only continue its pioneering work in using maritime education as a bridge between disparate communities but also to deepen its engagement with the pressing issues brought forth by the war in Gaza.
The Fairhaven Project envisages an expanded role in facilitating dialogue and understanding among youths from conflicted areas, with a particular focus on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The project recognizes the urgency of addressing the immediate and long-term impacts of the current conflict, aiming to foster a generation of leaders equipped with the tools of empathy, critical thinking, and a deep-seated commitment to peace.
